Advocacy

"In Pacific Islander tradition, we guide but don't control the journey. We create a safe harbor where students can explore their options and move forward with the strength that comes from knowing they're supported."

-Aunty Benjie Medlock

A Safe Harbor in Complex Waters

In the high-stakes world of higher education, students often face challenges that extend far beyond their immediate expertise. The Le Nu'u Legacy Foundation provides a confidential, culturally aware support system—a safe harbor where Pacific Islander students can find strategic clarity, trusted connections, and empowering resources to take control of their futures.

How We Help: Real-World Scenarios

Our advocacy is practical, hands-on guidance tailored to real-world situations. We empower students to ask the right questions, understand their options, and make informed decisions. While many of our current participants are student-athletes navigating athletic-specific challenges, we support all Pacific Islander students facing complex decisions in higher education. Important note: Le Nu'u Legacy does not provide direct legal, financial, or other professional services—we connect students with qualified professionals when needed. Examples of advocacy support we provide:

Navigating major academic transitions

Major transitions during college — whether transferring schools, changing academic direction, or or navigating significant life decisions like changing majors, transferring schools, or figuring out next steps after college — can be among the most significant choices a student makes. We provide a confidential, neutral sounding board to help students weigh their options, understand the processes and potential consequences, and develop a clear path forward without external pressure.

Evaluating Outside Opportunities

Outside opportunities — whether NIL deals for student-athletes, internships, entrepreneurial ventures, or financial investments — can be exciting but also carry significant risks. We help students evaluate opportunities carefully, ask the right questions, and protect themselves from exploitation before making commitments.

Managing Academic & Disciplinary Issues

When academic, institutional, or departmental issues arise, the university system can feel overwhelming. We act as a trusted first point of contact, helping students understand their options and connecting them with appropriate resources.

Balancing Family & Community Pressures

Pacific Islander students often carry the hopes and expectations of their entire family and community. We offer culturally-aware support to help them manage this unique pressure and balance personal goals with family obligations.

Health, Wellness & Financial concerns

Whether facing mental health challenges, family financial pressures, or questions about managing finances, we provide a confidential space to explore options and connect with appropriate professionals. This includes protecting our community from financial exploitation and predatory schemes. See our resource below.

Part of Le Nu'u's advocacy mission is making sure our students and families can recognize and protect themselves from financial exploitation. Crypto pyramid schemes targeting Pacific Islander communities are not new — we have been watching them spread through our networks for over a year. When they began reaching people we know and love in early 2026, we responded the way we always do — by doing the research, verifying the facts, and putting a clear, honest resource directly in the hands of our community.
